PDP mocks the impeachment of Edo Assembly Speaker

Also at the meeting are the Deputy Governor, Hon Philip Shaibu and some leaders of the APC in the state.

Okonoboh's sack as the Speaker followed an earlier impeachment notice signed by 16, out of the 24 members of the state House of Assembly.

Mr Okonoboh, who assumed office about 12 months ago, was removed as Speaker of the Edo Assembly on Monday morning.

The new Speaker of Edo State House of Assembly, Honourable Kabiru Adjoto, has ordered the clerk of the House to take steps to retrieve the official vehicles of the immediate past Speaker, his deputy and Majority Leader in order to enable their replacements to make use of them.

Mr. Okonoboh's predecessor, Victor Edoror, was impeached under similar circumstances in June 2016.

At yesterday's plenary, one of the members, Emmanuel Agbaje, read a letter of vote of no confidence on the principal officers.

Effort by another Member, M. D. Igbas, to prevent the removal of Okonoboh was reportedly resisted by some of his colleagues, who also descended on him.

The member representing Etsako West II, Sylvanus Eruaga, was said to have asked Okonoboh to vacate the exalted seat, a development that led to a fight among some of the lawmakers in the chambers.

He was accused of awarding contracts to himself and making his wife the 25th member of the House.

He said the Executive arm of the government and the the party leadership had to mediate in the crisis of the assembly to restore peace. Kabiru Adjoto, regretted that the impeached Speaker was elected in error and can not speak for Edo people. "We want to legislate for the people to move the state forward", Adjoto said.
