Masked Anarchists Attack Pro-Trump Demonstrators in Berkeley

Civic Center Park to nearby Ohlone Park, where the anti-fascist group known as "Antifa" had initially gathered earlier in the day.

Hundreds of anti-hate protesters showed up to Alamo Square in the city's Western Addition neighborhood, where Gibson had planned to hold an impromptu news conference in lieu of the planned rally. A few antifa members violently beat up a couple of alleged neo-Nazis.

Most of the 13 people arrested were locals from the East Bay, while others hailed from Oregon, Nevada and San Diego County. "No Nazis, Communist, KKK, Antifa, white supremacist, I.E., or white nationalists".

City officials denied at least three requests for permits from demonstrators from both political sides, which led organizers of both far right-wing rallies to ask supporters not to show up out of concern for their safety.

The city of Berkeley had issued a warning to residents last week, encouraging demonstrators and members of the public to steer clear of downtown on Sunday.

W. Kamau Bell, comedian and television host, addressed the crowd from the back of a speaker-laden truck in front of Martin Luther King Jr.

Joey Gibson, the organizer of Saturday's "Patriot Prayer" rally in San Francisco, followed suit.

Thousands of protesters converged in Berkeley, California, Sunday for a "Rally Against Hate" in response to a planned right-wing rally.

At least one protester set off a smoke bomb.

Police reportedly detained Gibson in the Berkeley unrest on Sunday but he was not arrested, his group said.

Far-right protesters were scarce and didn't remain in the park long. Many black-clad anarchist demonstrators wear masks at protests to hide their identities. Update at 12:45 p.m. Then the anarchists blended with a crowd of 2,000 largely peaceful protesters who turned up to demonstrate in a "Rally Against Hate" opposed to a much smaller gathering of right-wing protesters. One of the victims was a right-wing male demonstrator. The SFGate reported they were quickly swept up by officers inside Civic Center Park. (Sheraz Sadiq/KQED ) People chant "Cops and Klan!" The city has banned all sorts of items today, including sticks, clubs, etc.

Gibson Friday cancelled the so-called Freedom Rally over fears of a "huge riot", saying the group would instead hold a press conference on Saturday in Alamo Square Park. Police have been pro-active so far in their attempts to stop fights, physically escorting people out of the park and the area when skirmishes erupt. San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee declared victory over a group he branded as inviting hate.

Meantime, newly appointed University of California, Berkeley Chancellor Carol Christ said the campus was "working very hard on the security arrangements" for the September 14 appearance of conservative commentator Ben Shapiro.
