Marlins confirm sale agreement with Derek Jeter group

Jeter and Jordan (along with NY businessman Bill Sherman) are a part of the 16 investors looking to purchase MLB's Miami Marlins.

Jorge Mas will not be part of the Jeter group, Samson also confirmed on Saturday.

There have been reports for months that Derek Jeter had been assembling a team to purchase the Miami Marlins.

A deal would have to be approved by a vote with other franchise owners and could be approved by the first week of October.

An investment group led by a NY businessman and Players Tribune editor-in-chief Derek Jeter has made the winning bid to buy the Miami Marlins, according to multiple reports.

That, presumably, will include oversight of Marlins Park.

The bid still falls short of the initial asking price of $1.3 billion that Loria had hoped to get in the sale. The team has finished last in National League attendance in 11 of the past 12 seasons, so that represents one upside. The agreement was signed Friday night, according to Marlins president David Samson. That really could be a shame. That said, Jordan is believed to be putting in no more than a few million to the effort to buy the Marlins with the major goal of the move is to use his name above all else.
