Liverpool fail with two bids for Monaco's Thomas Lemar

Liverpool made an inquiry for Lemar, according to Burt.

But Arsene Wenger called off their pursuit last week, claiming Monaco had "closed the door" on a deal.

Arsenal had been in talks to sign Lemar all summer and are believed to have had a £30m offer rejected last month while Barcelona were also understood to be tracking the player.

With Benjamin Mendy and Bernardo Silva joining City, Tiemoue Bakayoko signing for Chelsea and kid wonder Kylian Mbappe on the verge of making a insane move to Paris Saint-Germain, Monaco are loath to see Lemar depart as well.

Just like the aforementioned players, Lemar rose to prominence last season as he starred for Monaco as they won the league title, pipping Paris Saint-Germain, while enjoying an incredible run in the Champions League.

The club confirmed the signing of Stefan Jovetic on Monday, and he could very well be Mbappe's replacement.

Mohamed Salah, Andy Robertson and Dominic Solanke have been the only new arrivals at Anfield so far this summer, while long-term target Naby Keita will join next summer for a club record £48m fee.

Ironically, given the events of the weekend and Liverpool's reported interest in Oxlade-Chamberlain, Arsenal have held something of a long term interest in Thomas Lemar. The Brazilian is yet to feature this season for the Reds due to an injury, but has also handed in a transfer request as he looks to force through a move.
