"I won't be distracted by those bullying tweets." — Blumenthal

Trump added, "I think Senator Blumenthal should take a nice long vacation in Vietnam, where he lied about his service, so he can at least say he was there". Trump's tweets may have had something to do with remarks the senator made on CNN that morning. "No one is above the law", Blumenthal said Monday.

Trump's allegations, ironically, stem from a 2010 article in the New York Times, a publication he has repeatedly denounced as "fake news".

Trump's tweets refer to the half-dozen documented occasions where Blumenthal falsely referred to service in Vietnam. John McCain's status as a Vietnam war hero in a tweet, derided Florida Sen. The others were for education.

"Politicizing the Department of Justice for personal ends, I think, is a disservice to the law, and it's also potentially a violation of the spirit of the First Amendment", Blumenthal said, suggesting that the department was "weaponizing" laws against leaking sensitive information. But, although he enlisted in the Marine Reserves, he did not serve in Vietnam.

"I remember the taunts, the insults, sometimes even physical abuse". "But I will not allow anyone to take a few misplaced words and impugn my record of service to our country".

A representative from Blumenthal's office said the tweets were standing as the Senator's response.

Blumenthal responded to the president's tweets by calling them "bullying" and said that the issue isn't about him, but the integrity and independence of Special Counsel Robert Mueller.

"When we returned, we saw nothing like this", the senator said at a CT rally in support of troops in 2003. "ORCRP016911-topic.html" class="local_link" >WWE and a Trump supporter.

Trump's tweets on Monday began just after 6:30 a.m. with a rallying cry about the size of his voter base.

When Blumenthal questioned the decision during an interview and called for an independent prosecutor to look into it, Trump took to Twitter to call Blumenthal's Vietnam claims "one of the greatest military frauds in US history".
