Haruo Nakajima, Actor Who Played Original Godzilla, Dies

Nakajima's tenure as Big G would last for twelve films and 18 years from 1954's original all the way through his swan song in 1972's Godzilla Vs. Gigan.

On that note, may Haruo Nakajima, the classic Godzilla suit actor of 24 years, rest in peace following his death at the age of 88. His first appearance was in 1954's Godzilla, for which he had to wear a 220-pound concrete bodysuit, due to a scarcity of rubber in post-war Japan. By that time, he had helped turn the giant lizard into one of the big screen's most recognizable monsters, right there alongside King Kong, the Mummy and Frankenstein's monster.

Sonoe Nakajima, the actor's daughter told The Associated Press that Nakajima passed away Monday from pneumonia.

Nakajima took on the monster role in more than just "Godzilla" films, however. His energy and zeal are said to be the main reason Nakajima bagged the role of Godzilla and went on to play the monster in 12 movies. In a postmodern twist, he then played his trademark Godzilla battling Mothra in Mothra vs Godzilla (1964); Manbat in Latitude Zero (1969), and even got the chance to portray his original simian inspiration, King Kong, in the 1967 United States/Japanese co-production King Kong Escapes. Here are ten of Toho's best kaiju that would make fine additions to the MonsterVerse, with explanations of who they are and why they need to be a part of the setting.

There have been more than 30 Godzilla movies in all, majority Japanese-made.

The Godzilla franchise has spawned 29 movies in Japan. 'It remains in people's memory and for that I feel really grateful'. Multiple sequels were made of the original film and Hollywood has since offered reboots, including Roland Emmerich's 1998 film and the animated series.
