Powell, who was arrested last month on rape and sexual battery charges, became the subject of a multi-agency manhunt after he overpowered a deputy and stole his.40-caliber service pistol and 30 rounds of ammunition, along with the deputy's wallet and cell phone.

Powell had been shackled and handcuffed in a van when he was able to maneuver over a row of seats and place a Paulding County deputy in a headlock, Landers said. On July 13, he slit his throat with a razor and had surgery at a nearby hospital.

He was being returned to the Paulding County Jail on Friday in a van driven by Paulding County Deputy Robert Miller when he got loose. Powell was later taken to the Toledo psychiatric hospital on five days later for treatment relating to his attempted suicide.

Closed-circuit television cameras from moments before the escape showed Powell walking next to the deputy.

Paulding County is on the IN border, about 50 miles south of MI.

According to Jason Landers of Paulding County Sheriff's Office, authorities spent a little over three hours trying to persuade Powell to give up before he shot himself.

The US Marshals offered a $2,000 reward for information leading to the apprehension of Powell.

Cops found the body of suspected rapist Branden Powell in a basement crawl space at his family's Antwerp Township home around 9:30 p.m., according to a police statement provided to WPTA-TV. "While this is not the outcome law enforcement had hoped for, law enforcement hopes the community can rest knowing this armed and risky individual is no longer a danger to the community". Officials with the sheriff's office said they could not say more than what was on the news release. "He had a mindset to escape", Landers said.

Officers were on the scene of the vehicle crash where Powell escaped within minutes of being alerted by Miller.

CBS News reported that Landers was "angry" with himself over the escape.

The sheriff intends to implement some changes regarding transporting prisoners, including adding barriers separating the front and back of transport vehicles.
