What the global takeover looked like.

With the vast popularity that "Despacito" has seen in only seven months, it looks like this might be a pretty tough record for future artists to break, but stranger things have happened.

The music video is now the most liked video on YouTube history, and is considered one of the most popular song of all time. Released to limited fanfare in January, by July the mesmerising Daddy Yankee collaboration was the most streamed song to date; it has now been streamed 4.6 billion times.

YouTube released a chart showing how "Despacito" stacks up to other top videos.

According to statistics shared on social media, Morocco contributed with 12 million views to the record-breaking number.

"I'm super excited and grateful to everyone who supported the song and video on YouTube, and happy to inspire and impact so many lives", Khalifa said in a statement.

YouTube says that monthly views of Latin acts generally are up by 178% in the United Kingdom; by 185% in France; by 352% in Egypt and by 940% in Indonesia, as a snapshot of the global growth for artists from the region that's emerging as the new spawning ground for streaming hits. I recognise the influence that the platform has. And YouTube has a big responsibility, and I recognise it. That video had recently surpassed Psy's "Gangnam Style" to be tops on YouTube.

And "Despacito" is clearly leading the charge.
