Check out Sonic Mania's bonus stages and time attack mode in action

Sonic Mania is developed by SEGA of America in collaboration with Christian Whitehead, PagodaWest Games, and Headcannon. In the stages, you have to chase down a UFO to get the Chaos Emerald while avoiding obstacles.

In "Blue Spheres", players navigate Sonic, Tails, or Knuckles through a series of blue spheres to clear the stage. Once inside, they function pretty much like they did in Sonic 3 where you have to collect blue spheres to turn them into red spheres that you then had to avoid. Check out Sonic Mania's Bonus Stages, Special Stages and Time Attack mode in the new trailer below. The bonus stages are also dubbed the Blue Sphere stages, most of which can be seen in the video below. If you hit a flawless score, you will receive Gold Medallions. You are to collect as many blue spheres as possible, which will add to your speed meter. Go for the world record in speed and you might just hit the top. Meanwhile, the Special Stages have you trying to catch a UFO. Though the perspective and controls are roughly the same as the Bonus Stages, the objective is so much clearer, and the miniature, self-contained levels are created to be mastered as you would a Mario Kart (make that Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing) track, looking for shortcuts and avoiding obstacles with hairpin turns and short hops. We also get a brief look at the time trial mode. The best part is, should you take a wrong turn or flub a spin dash, you can restart your run in the blink of an eye: simply hold Y/Triangle, and you'll be whisked back to the starting line, no menu visits necessary.

Sega has revealed Sonic Mania's modes in some new gameplay footage.

Sonic Mania launches for Nintendo Switch, PS4, PC and Xbox One on August 15th!
