Bryce Harper hurts leg in Washington Nationals' win over San Francisco Giants

Will the Bryce Harper-less Nationals take down the Giants in the first game of Sunday's double-header at 1:05PM ET? The play was not pretty.

For the second straight day, the Nationals and Giants were forced into a rain delay due to storms in Washington, D.C., and after deciding to postpone Friday's contest, the teams were forced to wait and do everything in their power to get the game in. They are bound to be upset and anxious now. The 2015 National League MVP is hitting.326 with 29 home runs and 87 RBI.

Giancarlo Stanton, who hit his Major League-leading 39th home run of the season, earlier in the game, was on deck. The Nationals and Giants are set to play a doubleheader on Sunday.

Manager Dusty Baker said after the game that everybody had the same reaction. He was 2-0 with a 2.92 ERA in two starts previous year against San Francisco.

Harper was in severe and obvious pain, sending baseball fans into a frenzy, many believing the injury was a torn ACL.

The Nationals won the clash against the Giants with a 3-1 triumph. "But it's a pitch that I've used - a pitch that I can definitely use more in the repertoire and add it to the arsenal to get hitters off the fastball and cutters and the slider". Jones jumped to his feet and raced to the bag to beat Harper by a step and a half, but when Harper did reach the bag, disaster ensued.

Rizzo diagnosed the bone bruise as significant but said he is optimistic that Harper will return later this season. The question becomes what happens if Harper misses playoff time. Harper has been relatively healthy this season and missed just three days with mild groin soreness back in May.

NOTES: Giants RHP Mark Melancon, who pitched a scoreless eighth inning, was activated off the disabled list and INF Miguel Gomez (right knee inflammation) was placed on the 10-day disabled list, retroactive to August 9.

"The good thing is he's young and strong", Baker said.
