Director General of Police Somesh Goyal has reportedly said that as per preliminary information there were eight persons in the Manali-Katra Volvo bus while 47 passengers were travelling in the other bus.

Shimla, India | At least six people are dead and dozens more missing in the northern part of India, after a landslide resulted in two buses on a mountain road to the precipice, said Sunday the authorities. As two HRTC buses washed away after a massive landslide in the Kotroopi area of Mandi district, the death toll and number of injured are expected to rise further.

The other bus was caught up in the landslide and was found two kilometres away.

Rescue teams reached the scene but struggled in the dark and steep terrain with the army later joining the search.

A team of NDRF and the army dug through mounds of mud and stones to recover 46 bodies from the site, Mandi deputy commissioner Sandeep Kadam told Hindustan Times.

Apart from the locals, the police, fire services and home guard personnel were already on the spot carrying on the rescue operations.

Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi on Sunday offered condolence to the families of the deceased in the Mandi landslide and requested the Himachal Pradesh Government to provide every possible aid. He directed the administration to assess the loss of life and property for early reimbursement of the compensation. "Immediate relief will be provided", Mr Singh said.

Summary: "I pray for the quick recovery of those injured in Mandi district, Himachal Pradesh", he added.

The Health Minister announced financial assistance of rupees four lakh to the next of kin of the deceased while the Transport Minister announced that rupees one lakh would be given by HRTC.
