Amazon To Release Lucille Ball Biopic Starring Cate Blanchett

The film is reportedly looking at big names for the role of Arnaz, including Javier Bardem, and for the roles of William Frawley and Vivian Vance who played Fred and Ethel in the I Love Lucy series. Aaron Sorkin (HBO's The Newsroom, The Social Network) will provide the script, while Cate Blanchett (Cinderella, The Lord of the Rings Trilogy) is being tapped to play Ball.

The rights for the movie include access to the official memoirs written by both Arnaz and Ball, which are now controlled by the couple's children, Desi Arnaz Jr. and Lucie Luckinbill. She eloped with the Cuban bandleader in 1940, and the two created the massively successful sitcom I Love Lucy in 1951 through their Desilu Productions. I don't know who the ideal screenwriter for a project like this would be, but it strikes me that Sorkin probably isn't that person. Lucy and Desi also has the blessing of the couple's adult children. The film will star Cate Blanchett - initially announced when the film was greenlit in 2015 - as the hilarious redhead in a story that charts her tumultuous relationship and career success opposite husband and band leader Desi Arnaz.

Blanchett's next film, 'Thor: "Ragnarok" sees the two-time Academy Award victor in a very new role, as Hela the goddess of death. What's more, the movie will center on Ball's life and her marriage to Arnaz. She won four Emmys for the role.

The rest of the cast has not been announced, but Deadline reports another Oscar victor - "Skyfall" actor Javier Bardem - is rumored for the role of Arnaz.
