Amazon.com, Inc. (AMZN) Plans First Australia Warehouse Near Melbourne

Amazon is set to open its first Australian fulfilment centre in Dandenong South, a suburb of Melbourne. Employees of Amazon's German unit striked in December over pay and conditions. Germany is Amazon's biggest operation outside the United States.

There are some clues in Braeuniger's CV as to Amazon's game plan in Australia.

Before Amazon, Braeuniger worked in consulting for five years. The location of the warehouse is near the country's east cost, which is where the majority of its population lives.

He is now director of consumables at Amazon Germany and his previous roles have included Pet Supplies, Health and Personal Care, Baby, Beauty, Grocery and Amazon Pantry.

Australians can already buy Amazon products from offshore, but having an Amazon warehouse locally adds to pressure on the country's brick-and-mortar retailers to protect already-fragile sales.

For retailers, it's another reminder of the need to understand how Amazon might affect your market and to have strategies in place.

Won't they? Posturing, Amazon earlier this year confirmed they would be opening operations in Australia and today they've taken the first steps announcing the first fulfilment centre in Australia.

"Over time, we will bring thousands of new jobs to Australia and millions of dollars of investment as well as opening up the opportunity for thousands of Australian businesses to sell at home and overseas through Amazon Marketplace", Amazon.com, Inc. said in a statement obtained by The Australian. The company has not mentioned plans to bring its fast-growing subscriber service, Amazon Prime, which typically brings a two-day delivery guarantee, to Australia.
