US Tennis Star Suffers Horrific On-Court Knee Injury At Wimbledon

Paramedics attend to Bethanie Mattek-Sands after she crumpled to the ground with an apparent knee injury at Wimbledon.

"It's not easy because at the end of the day it's not about tennis any more", said Cirstea.

Bethanie Mattek-Sands has thanked well-wishers for their support after the horrific knee injury she suffered at Wimbledon on Thursday.

Mattek-Sands was tied with Cirsea, at one set apiece, as the game headed into the third set at the All England Club.

French ace Mary Pierce, who was commentating on the match when the incident happen, reacted with shock - and she knows all too well exactly what it feels like.

Cirstea, who had dropped the first set 4-6 but took the second 7-6 (4), was declared the victor of the second round match.

The Romanian said, "I think everyone froze". This saw the player cry out in pain and clutch her right leg. She won a gold medal in mixed doubles at the Rio Olympics with Jack Sock, and has won the last three Grand Slam events with Safarova.

In November 2008, she married Justin Sands, an insurance executive.

The 32-year-old appeared to have suffered a dislocation of the knee-cap and was rushed to hospital in serious distress.

Her screams stunned the crowd at Court 17 into silence, and she could be heard crying, swearing and begging for help as Cirstea tried to comfort her.

Mattek-Sands was treated on court 17 for more than 20 minutes before being taken off on a stretcher. Cirstea was later seen in tears. You should look at the video and time how long it took.

Mattek-Sands, a wildcard singles player, was within reach of a win before the injury.

Some accused the Wimbledon medical team of not reacting quickly enough to Mattek-Sands' injury. I'm not sure how the other courts are, if they're damaged that much as Court 18.
