The verbiage of the vote included the "authorization of the IOC Executive Board to conclude a tripartite agreement with Los Angeles and Paris and their respective NOCs for the simultaneous election of the host cities of the Olympic Games 2024 and 2028 during the 131st IOC Session in Lima".

Leicester University sport sociology Associate Professor John Williams told Andrew Dickens there were only single bidders for the two games. "They are having to have a re-announce to decide which of these countries takes which of the games, we are in a new situation".

Paris and Los Angeles were the remaining candidates for the 2024 Olympics, a contest that International Olympic Committee boss Thomas Bach said created "a golden opportunity". And IOC president Thomas Bach hasn't wasted an opportunity since then to promote the advantages of such a solution.

After the cost to host the 2004 Athens Summer Olympics doubled to over $11 billion, Greece suffered a public debt crisis and is still an economic basket-case 13 years later.

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti said two of the world's "greatest cities" stand ready to host the Olympics. Boston, Rome, Budapest and Hamburg had earlier expressed interest in the Games, but later pulled out of the competition.

The chairman of the LA 2024 bid has said publicly that the bid wasn't just about 2024, suggesting the city would be interested in hosting the 2028 Games instead.

Negotiations will now begin between the International Olympic Committee and the two towns to reach an agreement likely on the order of assignment. The Econet Media and SABC agreements include a commitment to broadcast at least 200 hours of live/same-day coverage of each edition of the Olympic Games, and daily highlights of the Olympic Winter Games on free-to-air television.

Now that the IOC has appproved the simultaneous awarding of both Games, it is expected the move will officially secure the '28 Games for L.A. because the city's delegation has been receptive to the idea while the Paris organizers have insisted on '24 because they said the planned Olympic village will not be available in '28.

The two cities were the only ones left in the race to stage the 2024 Games.

Bach first raised the possibility of awarding the 2024 and 2028 games at once, saying in December that tapping one city at a time "produces too many losers".

Macron was the first head of state to attend the formal presentation of Olympic bids; Trump was not present.
