Mother charged with murdering four children and partner grins in court

Police said a fifth child, a 9-year-old girl, survived with serious injuries.

The judge advised her against not obtaining an attorney, but Martinez adamantly shook her head.

Immigration officials said Friday that Martinez illegally entered the US from Mexico.

In court, Martinez wagged her finger at a judge, who told her that she shouldn't perform for the cameras. Police said Martinez had been cooperative with investigators, though they have not yet revealed a possible motive in the deadly attack.

She reportedly told the judge that the people and her faith would act as her attorney, ABC News reports.

Before the hearing, Martinez sat with other inmates and struck poses for news cameras - smiling, giving a double thumbs up, putting her hands in a prayer position and spreading her arms out wide.

A spokesperson with the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency (ICE) also confirmed that Martinez "is a Mexican national who illegally entered the United States and is in the country unlawfully".

Martinez also declined legal representation, saying through an interpreter that she didn't want an attorney and will be represented by "the people".

Police had said the Romero and Martinez family lived in a quiet neighborhood, but that changed after a 911 call from inside the mobile home at 4:47 a.m. Thursday.

Other cases get less attention, as when a woman kills a newborn or in children's deaths blamed on neglect, said Cheryl Meyer, a psychology professor at Wright State University in OH and co-author of two books on mothers who have killed children based on about 1,000 cases during the 1990s.

The judge gave her a warning as he was reading her charges.

Authorities in Georgia charged 33-year-old Isabel Martinez on Thursday afternoon with five counts of malice murder, five counts of murder and six counts of aggravated assault, hours after police said she called 911 to report the killings from the home the family shared outside Atlanta. She remains in serious condition.

Martinez also rejected a court-appointed attorney, despite qualifying for one, CNN reported.

Their slain father was Martin Romero, 33, Pihera said.

"She seemed so good happy loved her kids", said neighbor Liett Perez.
