Masked gunman shot dead after failed helicopter heist in Oregon

Around 11:40am Monday, the unidentified gunman wearing a mask pointed his firearm at a flight instructor and a student inside a helicopter.

An armed suspect was fatally shot by police after attempting to steal a helicopter from Hillsboro Airport, CBS affiliate KOIN-TV in Portland reports.

The instructor and student fled and the man got into the helicopter, Reimann said. "He had his hands in his pockets, and for a moment I thought to myself that it was a little warm for the big, thick, gray hoodie with the hood over it", Neal said.

The hooded man ran toward the fence, pulled a mask over his face, climbed the fence, stepped on the barbed wire at the top and went over.

The masked suspect jumped the fence surrounding the airport and approached a helicopter with a student pilot, police said.

"He jumped in", Reimann said. Emergency services tried to save him but the suspect died on the scene before noon, authorities said. No other injuries have been reported.

The Hillsboro Aero Academy is the flight-training school at the airport. No new flights are arriving or taking off as a result, he said. That was the first he heard of the shooting.

The Port of Portland tweeted a statement following the incident.

The Hillsboro Fire Department tweeted that it was en route to the scene.
