However he won't immediately assign her the task of reading a throne speech, as Trudeau says there is simply no need for one at this point.

Kumar said Payette stood out from the beginning. Payette's already been championing science education as Chief Operating Officer of the Montreal Science Centre, but it's a safe bet, too, that her appointment as Governor General will show girls that a successful path in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) can lead just about anywhere. She also served as the Canadian Space Agency's chief astronaut between 2000 and 2007.

The 53-year-old Montrealer, who speak six languages including English and French, would be the 29th governor general with a salary of $290,660 and an official residence at Rideau Hall. She was the first Canadian to board the International Space Station, in 1999, and flew on space shuttles Endeavour and Discovery.

In 1996 she qualified as a military jet captain and took the helm in numerous CT-114 Tutor jets.

As she accepted the position standing alongside prime minister Justin Trudeau on Thursday, she recounted how she looked down on Canada from a spaceship.

She will be installed as Governor General during a ceremony this fall.

Johnston will have an audience with the Queen next week when he travels to the United Kingdom for Canada 150 events, marking the last time he meets with the monarch he represents.

It would replace the current governor-general David Johnston from September 2017. "I expected a lot of her in the early days, and I expect a lot from her now".

Kumar said Payette won the governor general's job on merit.

Payette said she was still thinking about how she'll handle the role.
