Coupes & V6 Not The Way Forward — Honda Accord

Honda has officially unveiled the tenth-generation Accord, set to be internationally launched later this year.

However, the tenth-generation 2018 Honda Accord should help revitalize a segment that's being seriously affected by strong demand for SUVs.

The 2018 Accord is wider, shorter, and lower than the model it replaces, but the wheelbase has grown by 54.8mm for added interior space. The lower grill is massive in size and gives the new Accord a prominent character. A secondary 7.0inch screen is also available for the driver. Cargo capacity increases by 0.9 cu ft to 16.7 cu ft. Honda enhanced visibility by lowering the front cowl, reducing the thickness of the front pillars by 20%, and moving the pillars rearward.

As showcased by the first official images, the Accord has a much bolder design than the conservative vehicle it replaces with sharper edges and a swept back four-door cabin that follows the latest coupe-like trend to give it a more sporting profile. And if you're seeing similarities with the Acura NSX supercar up front, you're not wrong.

Inside, the 2018 Accord can be positively loaded to the gills with high-end features, although it's not yet clear what equipment will be available on which trims. A 12-way power-adjustable driver's seat, heated and cooled front seats, and heated rear seats will be available, as well.

Other features include wireless device charging, Bluetooth phone pairing with a single tap, 4G connectivity with in-car Wi-Fi among many others.

Honda has taken the wraps off the 2018 Accord - which features an extensive redesign. All models are front-wheel-drive, with all-wheel-drive nowhere to be found.

The base engine of Accord is 1.5-liter four-cylinder. The 1.5- and 2.0-liter models will come in LX, Sport, EX, EX-L, EX-L Navi, and Touring, while the hybrid will come in Hybrid, EX, EX-L, EX-L Navi, and Touring.

Now, the powertrains. This is one area where there was no disagreement, and we were all correct. Sure, the old V6 had more juice (26 hp to be exact), but the additional 21 lb-ft should make up for it under acceleration, especially since the new Accord is about 65-kg lighter.

This engine is fitted with forged connecting rods, a forged crankshaft, improved cylinder head and block water pathways, and sodium-filled exhaust valves. The 2.0-liter, on the other hand, will come standard with a 10-speed automatic transmission. So far, the word is that the new Hybrid will use a 2.0-liter Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder engine, which in concert with its dual-electric-motor system developed by Honda, does not need a conventional transmission. That being said, the new lines represent more of an evolution than a revolution.

The Accord was an important auto for Honda India during the 2000s, but a drastic shift in the market trends coupled with a lack of diesel motor made the Accord's popularity in India vanish. At the same time, Normal and Sport drive modes affect the behavior of the dampers as well as the tuning of the new dual-pinion, variable-ratio steering rack, throttle mapping, and active noise control. Look for the gasoline-powered Accord to go on sale mid-fall, with the hybrid model to follow in 2018. It seems, though, that Honda is meeting the wants and needs of those of us who still appreciate the inherently better driving dynamics of a sedan versus a crossover. The bigger 4-pot is mated to Honda's new 10-speed automatic transmission, the first of its kind for a front-wheel-drive vehicle (once again, Sport models offer a 6-speed manual).
