Carey Price signs 8-year extension to remain with Habs

If there is a team in the NHL in need of offense, it is indeed the Canadiens, who finished 15th in the League with 223 goals last season.

The Montreal Canadiens signed goaltender Carey Price to an eight-year, $84 million contract extension Sunday to keep him with the team through the 2025-26 season. Yet despite three trips to the Eastern Conference Final since 2012, and an appearance in the 2014 Stanley Cup Final, Lundqvist and the Rangers have not won a Stanley Cup.

"We'll try to get that done as soon as possible", said Bergevin.

Price, 29, has one-year remaining on his current deal that pays him $7 million, though his salary cap hit is $6.5 million. "I never thought about putting on another uniform". The market, often times we're in a better position to know it because we talk amongst ourselves as GMs.

Bergevin said in an ideal world the Canadiens would have signed Price to a shorter deal, but understood they had to go to eight years.

The Dallas Stars signed right winger Alexander Radulov on Monday to a $31.25 million, five-year deal, the richest contract given to an unrestricted free agent this offseason. Given how important Price has been over these past few years, Bergevin surely felt that he needed to get him signed for the long haul, no matter the cost at the end of the day. To put it into perspective, the Habs now have $53 million in cap space tied up to 14 players for the 2018-19 season, when the $4 million salary jump will take place.

Such was Bergevin's choice, though there was no debate in the GM's mind which path he would choose. "We'll have to do it by committee, I guess".

Getting Price's contract taken care of now helps the Canadiens avoid a major headache, since he was nearly certainly going to be the best goaltender on the free-agent market this time next summer. Markov and Radulov are just the first ones to feel that impact.
