An Air Canada flight passes close to cause an air disaster

Air Canada Flight 759, which took off from Toronto for San Francisco on Friday, July 7, almost landed on a crowded taxiway - rather than its intended runway - when coming in for a landing at the San Francisco International Airport (SFO).

The Air Canada flight A320 from Toronto was supposed to land on Runway 28R but ended up "inadvertently" on Taxiway C, which is parallel to the runway, the Federal Aviation Administration said in a statement.

Immediately, as transcripts obtained by CBS 5 show, air traffic control tells the Air Canada pilot to "go around" - a rare move in which the pilot is told to pull up out of the descent and circle back around to land.

The incident, which Air Canada says it also is investigating, was first reported by the Bay Area News Group on Monday. Flight patterns and overheard noise and traffic for communities surrounding the airport will be affected accordingly.

Narrow escape: The pilot thought he was flying into Runway 28R, which was clear, but was actually heading towards Taxiway C, which had four planes on it.

The FAA is investigating, and has already noted that fog was not to blame - it was a clear night, and the pilot was landing the plane manually. "He's on the taxiway", that pilot says. "There is no one on 28R but you", the controller responds.

That pilot's plane was waiting for clearance to take off with three others on a taxiway - the aviation equivalent of side roads that planes use to move between runways and terminals.

"Where's this guy going?" another voice interjects. A pilot on the ground has asked the air traffic controller where moving the device in volume It has then been redirected. He added that the four passenger planes would have been filled with fuel and passengers.

"Yeah, I saw that guys", the control tower responded.

Typically, incoming global planes air directed to one of two runways: 28L or 28R, referred to verbally as "28-Left" or "28-Right". "We are still investigating the circumstances and therefore have no additional information to offer". Gregor declined to comment further, citing an ongoing investigation.
