Ajax's Abdelhak Nouri suffered serious, permanent brain damage after collapse

"In a post on their official Twitter account, the club said: "#Ajax are deeply saddened by the news that Appie Nouri has been diagnosed with serious and permanent brain damage".

"I want to say again, all of the strength and all of the thoughts are with him, and of course when the work goes onto the pitch then you have to do it, but on days like this it is not easy".

Doctors treating him in an Innsbruck hospital have since discovered that much of his brain is not functioning.

It is expected Nouri will soon travel to Amsterdam for further treatment, but the chances of recovery are low.

Ajax reported earlier this week that early tests showed his heart to be functioning normally and a brain scan at that time showed "no anomalies".

Nouri was treated on the field during the game - which was subsequently abandoned - at Lindenstadion in Hippach, Austria, before a trauma helicopter arrived and the 20-year-old was taken to hospital. "It's awful", Ajax director Edwin van der Sar said.

"The blow is hard here at Ajax, although we knew we had to consider this scenario".

Blind left Ajax for United in the summer of 2014 before Nouri made his senior debut, but Daley had trained with the talented midfielder when he was still a youth player and is devastated by the news.

"Abdelhak is such a great talent, but unfortunately we will never know how far his star would have reached had this not happened".

Abdelhak Nouri was a regular for Jong Ajax last season but also made a number of appearances for the first team.
