Wonder Woman India Box Office: Gal Gadot's Film Sinks Priyanka Chopra's Baywatch

The Patty Jenkins-directed film became the biggest opening for a film directed by a woman and, by the far, the most successful female-led superhero release.

The film stars Gal Gadot in the title role. The list includes Kathryn Bigelow (Zero Dark Thirty), Sam Taylor-Johnson (Fifty Shades of Grey), Nancy Meyers (It's Complicated, Something's Gotta Give) and Nora Ephron (You've Got Mail, Julie and Julia).

Box office takings for the movie Wonder Woman stood at $100.5 million (€89 million) as of yesterday in the USA. Patty Jenkins' Wonder Woman has been hailed as one of DC Comics' best superhero films in recent times by Indian and foreign film critics.

Behind the new champion is another newcomer, "Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie", which sits at No. 2 with an estimated $23.5 million.

When compared to other superhero solo films, Wonder Woman's debut is bigger than both Iron Man and Doctor Strange, but behind the likes of Man of Steel, Deadpool and Spider-Man. According to the Hollywood Reporter, women accounted for 52% of its audience, in a genre that, on average, is 60% male.

Wonder Woman, a warrior princess of the Amazons, made her DC Comics debut in 1941 and was famously played by Lynda Carter, a former Miss World USA, in a popular US TV series that ran from 1975 to 1979.

The "Wonder Woman" sequel will take place in America.

Last week's top film, "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales", slid dramatically to $21.6 million in its second week.

"Wonder Woman" also acted as a shot in the arm to Warner Bros.' critically beleaguered DC superhero brand - which includes three panned blockbusters, 2013's "Man of Steel", 2016's "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" and 2016's "Suicide Squad" - as well as a sluggish summer movie season that was down almost 9% from past year going into the weekend.

The fifth installment of the Pirates franchise has earned United States dollars 386.6 million to date internationally for a global total combined with North America of USD 501.2 million.
