Wawrinka advances to French Open quarterfinals

Second-seeded Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic reached her first French Open quarterfinal by coming back to edge 97th-ranked Veronica Cepede Royg of Paraguay 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.

Andy Murray moved into the quarter-finals of French Open. I have to thank the rain a little bit in that match.

"Obviously there was awful tragedy in London and Manchester. Very solid off both wings, risky off both wings, and moves quick", Murray added. I'm sure everybody will share in thoughts and prayers for everyone who's been affected by this.

Murray made only 14 unforced errors.

But the 30-year-old - despite being broken on a couple of occasions - was never truly troubled and a combination of brilliant defensive work and a superior clinical edge meant Murray booked a last-eight meeting with either Kei Nishikori or Fernando Verdasco.

Third seed Stan Wawrinka is yet to drop a set and ended France's hopes for another year with a 7-5 7-6 (9/7) 6-2 victory over Gael Monfils.

Wawrinka is scheduled to face seventh seed Marin Cilic of Croatia after South African Kevin Anderson retired hurt when trailing 6-3, 3-0.

It is Cilic's first Roland Garros last-eight spot while he is the first Croatian to get this far since Mario Ancic and Ivan Ljubicic in 2006.

Earlier on Monday, Romanian third seed Simona Halep sealed a blistering 6-1 6-1 win over Spain's Carla Suarez-Navarro to establish herself as one of the top contenders for the title. There were no lapses on Monday from Murray.

Former champion Stan Wawrinka and top-ranked Andy Murray were to play later Monday.

The French Open 2017 tournament is all set to step into championship week as the remaining fourth-round matches will be played today.

"Actually I'm very bad with the memories", Nishikori said.

The 25-year-old Halep will tackle Ukraine's fifth seed Elina Svitolina for a semi-final place.

"I sill feel the ankle some times but I am able to run".

He added that he thinks "quite probably" the semifinals will be No. 1 vs. "Yeah, come a long way the last 10 days or so". He was the runner-up a year ago.

The two compatriots have been involved in a recent feud over the Fed Cup and are barely on speaking terms.

"I played my best match of the tournament".

Svitolina, who needed treatment on her back at the start of the third set, won on her second match point when Martic hit a backhand into the net.

Cornet is playing in her 45th Slam but has yet to reach a quarter-final.
