Scott Dixon spoils Penske party to win at Road America

Scott Dixon spoils Penske party to win at Road America

The entirety of the field made use of the safety auto to pit and switch to the soft tire that would likely take them to the end of the race, with Hamilton heading the field ahead of Vettel and Perez for the restart on Lap 17.

The safety auto was deployed for the third time as debris was cleared, albeit too late for Raikkonen, who sustained damage to his vehicle after running over bodywork at Turn 1, forcing him to head to the garage.

From the start this had been Penske's race to lose, and lose it they did. Aleshin was detained in France after the 24 Hours of Le Mans with visa issues, missed Friday practice, got to Wisconsin on Saturday morning just in time to qualify the No. 7 vehicle and on top of that, the airline lost his luggage.

"It's not what I expected, I'm just so pleased for the whole team". Dixon passed Josef Newgarden for the lead on a Lap 31 restart, using a new set of red-sidewalled tires for maximum grip to go past on the outside of Turn 1. What is good, we've kind of had the top four spots with all of us all weekend.

The race for the lead between Castroneves and Newgarden began to heat up 18 laps in when Newgarden moved in on the rear of his teammate's auto.

Paul Gohde heard the sound of race cars early in his life.Growing up in suburban Milwaukee, just north of Wisconsin State Fair Park in the 1950's, Paul had no idea what "that noise" was all about that he heard several times a year.

In 2016, Aleshin started ninth and finished fifth on the 0.894-mile oval, the first of three top-six finishes in a four-race span for the 30-year-old driver. Sato is 14 points behind Dixon. The Russian driver was returning to the IndyCar circuit after competing in the 24 Hours of Le Mans last week.

Power, who lost a place to Newgarden at the start and temporarily fell behind Ganassi's Max Chilton and Charlie Kimball after a restart, said: "We were just caught up in things all day". But I knew it was going to get interesting.

The only other caution came when Indianapolis 500 victor Takuma Sato spun on Lap 28.

It looks improbable for anyone to beat Team Penske going into Kohler Grand Prix weekend. "It was all or nothing", Hamilton said.

"We're going to Iowa next, and (Penske) should have an advantage there, too", said the Frenchman, who finished fourth a year ago at Iowa behind future Penske teammate Newgarden, Power and Dixon.

We watched the start of the race from the Corvette bridge between turns five and six, then headed down towards turn seven and were able to get really close to the track.

With three minutes remaining a red flag came up, halting the session, after Daniel Ricciardo clipped the wall with the left side of his Red Bull coming out of Turn 6, prompting an expletive from the Australian driver.

Castroneves held off Pagenaud for the final podium spot while Power completed a 2-3-4-5 for Penske. "Just disappointed we couldn't get it done".

Vettel served his penalty and emerged back out on-track in seventh, one place ahead of Hamilton, with both drivers unhappy with the sanction that had been handed out. "We know we need to put this vehicle in the winner's circle a few more times to move to the top spot in the standings, and that's really what we are trying to do".

Eight laps in, teams opting for a four-stop strategy - including Rahal, Alexander Rossi, Tony Kanaan, Conor Daly and J.R. Hildebrand - began to pit.
