Reds select high school phenom Hunter Greene in Major League Baseball draft

The drama went all the way down to the last minute.

As many as seven or eight players were still under consideration for the top selection down to the final 36 hours, Radcliff said, and negotiations were held with several of those candidates.

Lewis, the 2017 Gatorade Player of the Year in California, was watching the Draft on MLB Network with his family at his grandparents' house when he received a call from general manager Thad Levine that he'd be the first pick.

To a lesser extent, the same is possible for Greene, who was announced only as a pitcher when the Reds selected him. It's a scenario similar to when they took Joe Mauer with the No. 1 overall pick in 2001 over Mark Prior, as that went down to the wire and money was a consideration.

Three players who finished in the top 10 in MVP voting in 2016 were drafted in Rounds 3-10.

It was Royce Lewis, a friend of Greene's from the USA Baseball 15U National Team and another Southern California prep baseball star.

"Cody would have taken him 1/1 I think", Marlins vice president of scouting Stan Meek said. "That's my favorite tool, I guess you would say, because it's always there and it never leaves you".

McKay was the first college player selected.

Youth and potential took precedence over experienced products with three consecutive high school players selected to open the draft and four coming off the board within the first six picks The unexpected trends at the top of draft resulted in a bevy of college talent available later in the first round.

Twins officials spoke highly about Lewis throughout the draft process.

"I can't wait to get out to LA", Adell said.

Lewis could be an outfielder in professional baseball. "He has the quick feet and plus arm strength required to play shortstop, though scouts aren't certain that he'll make the necessary adjustments as he continues to fill out and the speed of the game advances". "He's got a great personality, and he's a natural leader".

"He played center field often on the summer showcase circuit preceding his senior year and showed plus range and flashes of advanced defensive instincts". While Reds GM Dick Williams said that Greene will be tried as a pitcher first, he said the door to the 17-year-old eventually playing in the field isn't closed.

There is no TV coverage of the draft on Tuesday, but will provide online streaming, including analysis and information from draft gurus Jim Callis and Jonathan Mayo from MLB's New York Studios. "It's a great ball club, a handsome stadium and a great fan base so I'm excited". Wake Forest first baseman Gavin Sheets, son of former Orioles outfielder Larry Sheets, was picked 49th by the Chicago White Sox. "I still love doing both and I think the ballclub is excited for getting two players for one". He would go on to play almost 2000 games in the big leagues and be worth 33.1 WAR, per Baseball-Reference.

McKay confirmed that there had been negotiations with the Twins about being the No. 1 selection.

With the selection, the team gets possibly the best position player in the draft. "It ultimately came down to, another team was able to give a better offer, so we went with that". On Monday night, the Yankees drafted him anyway with the 16th overall pick in the draft. Thereafter, the first round had several storylines develop. Then Tar Heels shortstop Logan Warmoth went seven picks later as the No. 22 overall pick to the Blue Jays.

The Oakland A's used the sixth overall pick on outfielder Austin Beck of North Davidson High School in Lexington, N.C. In 28 games as a senior, Beck batted.590 with 12 home runs and 38 RBIs.

Among the second-round picks was North Carolina State shortstop Joseph Dunand, the nephew of Alex Rodriguez who was selected as a third baseman by Miami at No. 51 overall.
