Rabid Raccoon Is No Match For Fearless Maine Woman

Rachel Borch, from Hope, Maine, was forced to drown a rabid raccoon after it attacked her while she was jogging on a wooded trail near her home. "I knew it was going to bite me", she said.

But, she said, "I really do also hope that I can accomplish something more with my life, more than just my 15 minutes of fame as a raccoon killer". Borch, who had dropped the phone she was carrying into the same puddle, darted off towards home as the raccoon released its grip on her thumb.

"I always thought of raccoons as this cute, cuddly forest animal", she says.

What felt like a split second later, the furry animal was at her feet. She figured her hands would be the best spot, so she offered them up.

A raccoon suddenly crawled out of the shrubbery and bounded her like "a Tasmanian devil", she told Bangor Daily News.

Borch's mother immediately took her to the Pen Bay Medical Center for treatment. "I don't know if I would've been able to keep my composure and handle the situation the way she did". Before she even had time to react, the raccoon came rushing at her, and that was just the beginning of the poor girl's ordeal. Borch panicked. Then she remembered her phone that sank into the puddle.

"With my thumb in its mouth, I just pushed its head down into the muck", Borch says. "It was still struggling and clawing at my arms and legs, (and) it wouldn't let go of my thumb". The beast was still struggling and scratching her arms, but Borch managed to maintain her focus in drowning the animal, despite its attempts to eat away at her fingers. "Borch describes the event like something out of "[Stephen King's] Pet Sematary".

According to Hope Animal Control, Borch was treated for rabies with six shots as of Wednesday. She was terrified and scared that she might begin foaming at the mouth.

Rachel headed to the hospital while her father recovered the raccoon's corpse from the nearby pond. It was revealed a few days later that the animal tested positive for rabies. No more Guardians of the Galaxy movies for her.
