Potus admits he's under probe over Russian Federation ties

It was a memo written by Rosenstein that was originally used by the White House as justification for Comey's firing. In that case, Rosenstein could be called as a witness.

Mr Comey, who had been leading one of several Russian Federation inquiries, testified to Congress last week that the president had pressured him to drop an inquiry into links between Mr Flynn and Russian Federation.

Earlier this week, a close friend of the president's indicated Trump is considering firing Mueller. "That's undemocratic on its face and a blatant violation of the president's oath of office", Feinstein said in a statement.

Friday's tweet marked the first time Mr Trump has publicly acknowledged he is under investigation.

"Witch hunt' is how Trump characterises the probe into Russia's election interference and possible ties to his campaign associates".

The Washington Post reported on Wednesday that Mueller is investigating possible obstruction of justice by Trump.

"Americans should be skeptical about anonymous allegations", Rosenstein said.

A Department of Justice spokesperson declined to address what prompted the statement. Trump is also accused of inquiring from Comey if he is under the investigation.

According to the Post, Trump has three ways of ousting Mueller.

The investigation appears to be reaching a broadening circle of current and former officials.

Trump reportedly asked Rosenstein and Attorney General Jeff Sessions to write memos justifying Comey's firing, but later said on national television that he planned to dismiss Comey so regardless of their recommendations, in part because of the "Russia thing". One adviser said the comments trashing Mueller and Rosenstein from Trump and others "should not be viewed as just a pure coincidence".

The focus on Rosenstein sharpened Friday because the President attacked the deputy attorney general in a tweet, blaming him for what he terms a "witch hunt".

Like many Trump tweets, it can be read both ways. An official of Trump's transition confirmed the laywer's internal order sent Thursday.

Regardless of the outcome, the specter of Mueller examining the possibility of obstruction of justice appeared to be a new blow to Trump, whose first five months in office have been clouded by the federal and congressional probes into the Russian Federation issue. Mr Comey testified that Mr Trump directed him in February to drop an FBI investigation into former national security adviser Michael Flynn relating to the Russian Federation matter.

The White House has directed questions to outside legal counsel, which has not responded.

Vice president Mike Pence, who headed the Trump transition until Inauguration Day, has also hired a private lawyer to represent his interests in the expanding probe a nd Mr Trump's personal lawyer Michael Cohen has retained a brief to represent him.

The development marks another expansion of the Federal Bureau of Investigation probe, whose scope had previously been limited to uncovering whether Trump's campaign colluded with the Kremlin during the 2016 election.
