Mexico recovers to beat NZ 2-1 in fiery Confed Cup game

Social media and the Mexican press were fierce in criticising Osorio's side on Wednesday after they scraped past New Zealand 2-1 in their second Group A match at the Confederations Cup.

Portugal had been topping the group momentarily after beating host Russian Federation 1-0 earlier in the day, but Mexico are now ahead of the Iberians, despite having the same goal difference (+1), because they have scored four goals while Portugal have scored three.

Despite the off-field disruption, the Portuguese star also picked up the Man-of-the-Match award in his team's opening 2-2 draw with Mexico on Sunday.

Putting his tax problems and transfer speculation aside, Ronaldo headed in Bruno Alves' cross to put Portugal on the brink of the Confederations Cup semi-finals.

Nevertheless, Russia will be left to rue their missed chances and will head into their final group match against Mexico knowing that a vastly improved all-round display will be needed if they are to keep their dreams of a winning silverware alive.

Portugal will be without Raphael Guerreiro on Saturday, though the Borussia Dortmund defender could return in the tournament.

"We gave them too much time on the ball and space".

"There is no place for disrespect in football and I am sorry".

The 56-year-old had a heated argument with one of New Zealand's assistant coaches after Mexico's Carlos Salcedo went down with a shoulder injury in the first half.

Osario said the match turned when Porto midfielder Hector Herrera came on for the second half and Mexico's attacks started to flow.

Mexico tops the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup Group A, with four points after two games.

"We took them to the very limit", Hudson said after his team was eliminated with a game remaining in Group A, "and at times they couldn't handle that".

He said: "I see this as another game that we want to approach with the mindset of being organised, having the right mentality and we want to get a result". Although he had other chances, the current balloon d'or holder couldn't find the back of the net.
