Kohli-Kumble matter should have been handled professionally: Ganguly

The team also reached the semi-finals of both, the 2015 World Cup and the 2016 World Twenty20.

Shastri is said to be captain Virat Kohli's coach of choice.

Shastri applied for the post previous year, but was unsuccessful as Anil Kumble was deemed to be the best candidate.

Empathising with Anil Kumble, who resigned as India's coach last week, former India captain Sunil Gavaskar said the legendary leg-spinner was humiliated and the manner of his exit was "very sad". He has tasted decent success with this team till Anil Kumble succeeded him.

Said to be enjoying the backing of captain Virat Kohli, Shastri now emerges as the favourite to take over as the next coach of India.

Mail Today had reported on July 22 that the decks are being cleared so that Shastri can now apply.

The BCCI's Cricket Advisory Committee - comprising Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman - has been tasked with selecting the team's coach.

"Always loved working with Team India and hopefully they find the coach most suited for their team", he wrote on Twitter.

Sourav Ganguly would have also applied for the head coach's position of the Indian cricket team had he not been an administrator.

Shastri's first stint as the team manager (effectively for a caretaker spell) came after India's forgettable World Cup campaign in 2007. He wanted characters in the team, so he worked on that kind of approach.

Shastri now joins the likes of Tom Moody, Richard Pybus, Virender Sehwag, Lalchand Rajput and Dodda Ganesh as contenders for India's top job. BCCI had also invited applications for the positions of the head coach before the Champions Trophy began.

"I don't want to discuss this matter - (re-application for post of coach) - as it is a call that has been taken keeping the on-going situation in mind".

One year on, now the former leg-spinner has left the position, Shastri is, according to many reports, the favourite to land the job.

While Shastri had blasted Ganguly for being "disrespectful" by not attending the interview, Ganguly had slammed the former by saying he should "not sit in Bangkok and give a presentation while being on a holiday". He grabbed this opportunity and applied for this post through a mail. Last time around when Anil Kumble was chosen, two out of the three did not vote for Shastri.
