Inmates accused of killing prison guards face murder charges

Inmates accused of killing prison guards face murder charges

"Due to the nature of this crime, there is no bond set", said Judge Brenda Trammell, Superior Court Judge.

Wednesday morning, inmates Donnie Russell Rowe and Ricky Allen Dubose were charged with two counts of murder, one count of carjacking, and a felony escape.

The Georgia inmates accused of killing two prison guards during an escape appeared in court Wednesday as a prosecutor indicated he will seek the death penalty for both of them.

Rowe and Dubose, reportedly overpowered, disarmed and killed Sgt. Christopher Monica and Sgt. Curtis Billue and then carjacked a driver who happened to pull up behind the bus on a rural highway.

"Judge, I've been asked dozens of times whether we're seeking the death penalty in this case, and I've told everybody that we're going to be thorough and we're going to be careful in this case, and we will", Bradley said. Their next court date was set for September 18. The Department of Corrections said Rowe, 43, has been serving life without parole since 2002, and Dubose, 24, began a 20-year sentence in 2015.

Rowe and Dubose were apprehended Thursday in Rutherford County after a police pursuit through the county earlier that day.

They were arrested two days later in Tennessee following an intense manhunt. He also was convicted of theft and identity fraud in 2010.

They were captured in Tennessee on June 15 after leading police on a high-speed chase. The two men held them at gunpoint, authorities said. Sergeant Curtis Billue's sisters were inside the courtroom where they looked at their brother's alleged killers for the first time. "All I can do is say that I immediately, when this took place, I immediately forgave them".

"When I first laid eyes on them, all I could do was think, 'how could you kill two innocent men who were only doing their jobs?" continued Billue. "But forgiveness does not excuse their behavior and all I can say is that, at this point, we just want justice served".
