Cyborg vs. Anderson for 145 title at UFC 214; de Randamie stripped

Cyborg vs. Anderson for 145 title at UFC 214; de Randamie stripped

The bout was announced this morning along with the news that Germaine de Randamie had been stripped of the title following her refusal to take a fight with Cyborg.

On Monday, the UFC announced that de Randamie had been stripped of her 145-pound title, which she won back at UFC 208 in February, defeating Holly Holm for the vacant crown via five-round unanimous decision.

That means the Southland-trained Brazilian Santos will now fight for the featherweight belt against recently signed Invicta FC featherweight champion Megan Anderson July 29 in the co-main event of UFC 214 at Honda Center.

Cyborg and Anderson had both lobbied for a fight at UFC 214 and now they will get their wish as de Randamie is no longer champion and a new featherweight queen will be crowned in July.

Cyborg (17-1-1NC) is cleared to fight after being granted a retroactive Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE) for Spironolactone, the banned substance she popped for during an out-of-competition drug test administered on December 5. "It has been ten months since my last fight, but I've been training this whole time and have been ready to fight at UFC 214".

Subsequently, the UFC has chose to strip her of the 145-pound title that she won in February with a decision victory against Holly Holm.

"I definitely think the UFC created this division around one person [Justino], but unfortunately I don't think she is someone you can build around", Anderson said.

Justino is regarded as the best women's fighter in the world and been deemed unbeatable by fight fans.

"This is the fight that needs to happen", Anderson said. Her most recent bout was a win over Charmaine Tweet at Invicta FC 21, which gave her the interim featherweight championship in that promotion.

"Cyborg"(17-1), who has always been considered the best female featherweight in the world, has not fought since September of previous year, when she destroyed Lina Lansberg in Brasilia.

"I had absolutely no idea that I was being stripped of the belt", De Randamie told MMAFighting today.

The highly-anticipated rematch between Jon Jones and Daniel Cormier will headline the card in Anaheim.
