The International Yoga Day debuted in 2015 after a United Nations backed the India-sponsored initiative that was supported by over 170 member states.

Mahendragarh, Jun 21 Yoga guru Ramdev may have led a record 54,000 people in Ahmedabad in performing asanas on International Yoga Day today but there were merely 40 people who perfomed yoga in his native village Saidalipur in Haryana.

Ramdev, along with Shah and Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani, was a part of the International Yoga Day celebrations being held in Ahmedabad. 3-4 lakh people are expected to attend the event.

The International Yoga Day is on 21st June and around 200 countries are celebrating this special day. "We have broken the previous world record, which was set in the presence of our PM, by a huge margin", Ramdev told reporters after the event.

Ramdev said the turnout here is all set to make it to the Guinness Book of World Records, whose officials were also present at the event to tabulate the number of participants.

Patanjali Yogpeeth, one of the organisers of the event, also claimed that over 22 other world records were also set during the event.

On Tuesday, Ramdev had said that Shah lost 20 kilograms as a result of practicing yoga.

Earlier on Wednesday, the Prime Minister addressed a gathering in Lucknow on the occasion of Yoga day. "Make yoga a part of your daily life to experience the tranquility of mind, body & spirit!" he tweeted.

Thousands of people performed yoga at the sprawling Gujarat University grounds here early on Wednesday despite light showers in what was claimed to be the world's biggest congregation exercising together. "People in the neighbouring country also want to learn yoga", he added.
