Senate Votes to Confirm Lighthizer as Trade Representative

Senate Votes to Confirm Lighthizer as Trade Representative

The dairy industry is eager to work with U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer to protect and expand market access for U.S. dairy while addressing problematic Canadian dairy policies, the U.S. Dairy Export Council (USDEC) and the National Milk Producers Federation (NMPF) said following Lighthizer's Senate confirmation.

With Thursday's vote, Trump's trade-team leadership is in place. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., said the next US trade representative has to step up on trade enforcement to pry open markets for USA -made goods.

In 2010 testimony to U.S. Bernie Sanders of Vermont in voting no.

Republicans, in contrast, were more wary of the nominee and the policy shift his confirmation heralds. Lighthizer has previously served as staff director of the Senate finance committee and as deputy USTR. "If not, the conditions aren't there to negotiate", Guajardo said at an event in the northern city of Monterrey.

The report also added the Trump administration may also move its attention towards the Seoul-Washington free trade agreement in the near future. He also has represented the United States at meetings of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development and meetings related to the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (the precursor to the World Trade Organization).

Even so, those negotiations are still months away because the administration must first give Congress 90 days notice prior to the formal start of talks.

There are certainly some classic free traders in the Senate, particularly among Republicans, but they have largely gone silent as Mr Trump tries to revamp decades of past global policy. It was poised to gain significantly from the 12-nation Trans-Pacific Partnership that Trump threw overboard when he took office. Lighthizer is expected to work closely with Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross.

In the case of the companies, it was building US facilities.

Trump has taken issue with the United States' trade deficits with such countries as China and Japan, while maintaining that the US dollar has strengthened too much against some currencies.

In particular, they singled out Lighthizer's attitude toward agriculture. Cory Gardner (R-Colo.) was the only other Republican to vote against Lighthizer.

Following the confirmation vote, agriculture groups stressed the importance of trade. We look forward to learning more about the Administration's trade agenda for the financial services industry and working with him to advance the interests of USA insurers and reinsurers globally. The waiver passed in late April, clearing the way for the Thursday vote.
