Soundgarden were one of the leading bands in the grunge music movement in the 1980s and '90s, releasing albums such as Badmotorfinger and the Grammy-winning Superunknown, which brought the band mainstream success.

Kiss singer Paul Stanley tweeted he was "Stunned to hear the death of Chris Cornell", while Aerosmith's Joe Perry called his passing "a sad loss of a great talent to the world". After splitting in 1997, they reunited in 2010 for their sixth studio album King Animal, with the band having sold more than 10.5 million records in the USA as of 2012 and winning two Grammy awards. It included hit singles "Spoonman", "Fell on Black Days", "Black Hole Sun", "My Wave" and "The Day I Tried to Live".

Cornell, who first gained fame as the lead singer of Soundgarden and later the band Audioslave, was found in his hotel room at the MGM Grand Detroit following the band's performance at the Fox Theatre, his rep and Detroit police confirm to PEOPLE.

Cornell's wife asked a friend to check on Cornell, according to the Detroit News.

The medical examiner's office in Detroit is conducting an autopsy on the body of rocker Chris Cornell, who died Wednesday night.

The final solo recording released by Cornell was "The Promise", released on May 10.

Soundgarden had one of the heaviest sounds in grunge with trappings of heavy metal, even though Cornell cited The Beatles, to whom he listened constantly as a child, as his biggest influence. He was also part of Temple of the Dog, a tribute band to friend and fellow Seattle singer Andrew Wood of Mother Love Bone, and fronted the band Audioslave with members of Rage Against the Machine.

"You should have been at that Detroit show", Cornell imagined telling the crowd at the next concert.

Rock on the Range will be held May 19-21 in Columbus, Ohio. He was active on social media prior to his death Wednesday night.

Sir Elton posted a picture of Cornell on Instagram, with the caption: "Shocked and saddened by the sudden death of Chris Cornell".

Cornell is survived by his wife Vicky, daughter Toni, son Christopher, and daughter Lillian Jean from his first marriage. But he has to admit that something seemed off at the concert which took place just hours before Cornell died.
