Nine ministers resign ahead of Odisha cabinet reshuffle

Bhubaneswar: Ten Ministers resigned voluntarily from Naveen Patnaik cabinet on Saturday.

The swearing-in ceremony would be held on Sunday at Raj Bhavan here and 11 new ministers would take the oath of office, sources said.

To counter the BJP's rise, Naveen had on Friday named many of these ministers as observers of 11 districts in the state to fortify BJD's base at the grassroots level.

Amat was the Speaker in the third term of the BJD government. After reshuffle, Pujari is very likely to take up the position of a minister in the Naveen Patnaik cabinet, PTI reported.

Amid talks of a ministry reshuffle, Odisha Assembly speaker Niranjan Pujari on Friday resigned from his position giving rise to speculation that several ministers may resign apparently to pave the way for the reshuffle.

It is expected that he could be inducted into the cabinet.

Odisha can have a maximum of 22 ministers excluding the chief minister.

Sources in BJD said some other ministers, such as Snehangini Chhuria (Handloom and Textiles), may also be asked to resign following the BJD's poor performance in the panchayat polls in her Assembly segment, Attabira. "I would try to stand up to the expectation of the chief minister and perform my duty with full integrity", said Samal. Despite the chief minister removed a number of young ministers to look after party organization, he tried to strike balance in his time by inducting several young faces like Bhatli MLA Susanta Singh, Cuttack Sadar MLA Chandrasarathi Behera and Karanjia MLA Bijay Nayak.
