National Day Of Prayer Observed In St. Cloud

National Day Of Prayer Observed In St. Cloud

In 1988, during the final year of the Reagan presidency, the resolution was amended to permanently set the National Day of Prayer as the first Thursday in May.

The 2017 National Day of Prayer theme is "For your great name's sake!" The very next day a representative from Tennessee introduced legislation that enshrined the call for prayer.

Kathy Hanselman, the wife of the late Center Line Mayor David Hanselman, said she remains thankful for the city's support of the observance. He's my best friend - what a friend we have in him. They will then fellowship and discuss ways to continue to bring the community together through faith and offer prayers asking for peace and blessings for the country.

Phil Padget prayed for the military. "It is about making sure we are able to have a free and open ablilty to express our views".

- For I thy handmaid worship God even now that I am with thee, and thy handmaid will go out, and I will pray to God (Judith 11:14).

Payne noted that the Bible, in the book of Romans, says there are no powers but those ordained by God.

"I know what prayer can do", said Clarke. But a National Day of Prayer is meant to transcend even the civil affairs and should remind the citizenry that they have a destiny and soul beyond the state.

"Let us stand out. In Kingsport, we have a lot of unity", Clark said.

Renee Rector prayed for families.

Tupelo native Janie Lofton was one of the attendees, and said she took heart in that so many people would take time out of their day for the quick devotion.

And Matt Higdon prayed for the youth.

For many years, along with people from many various churches of this region, I've been participating in the National Day of Prayer gatherings at the courthouse steps. But as early as 1775 the Continental Congress had urged people to pray for wisdom in the creation of a new nation.

"With the political climate we live in today we do see a rather divisiveness and we've got two different sides...we think the national day or prayer just kind of helps people come together", he said.

The church is one of thousands of groups of various faiths, which from morning through evening will host events during Thursday's observance.

"Praise the Lord for the Warren Fire Department, for the outstanding job they did", Fouts said.
