Police haven't released the motive behind the fatal shooting of a DE state trooper that led to an all-night standoff which ended in the suspect's death.

He was investigating a suspicious vehicle in the parking lot of a Wawa convenience store with two people inside when one man got out and shot the trooper several times before escaping, police said. Then, one got out and shot Ballard several times before running away. The other man in the vehicle was arrested at the scene.

As the stand-off stretched into the night, police used an explosive device to blow the home's door off its hinges at 8:22 p.m. but did not enter the home, Fournier said.

UPDATE at 10:25 p.m. Police have said Sealy's family is cooperating with the investigation, and there is hope they could help shed light on why Sealy opened fire.

Cops returned his gunfire and the man was quickly killed close to 9:30am.

No other officers have been injured during the standoff at the time of publication, according to authorities. Police said in a statement that officers have yet to go inside the home.

The head of the Delaware State Police, Col. Nathaniel McQueen Jr., said Ballard's actions "exemplified the dedication that he brought to the citizens of Delaware on a daily basis".

Multiple special operations response teams and conflict management teams from several police agencies are attempting to talk to the suspect and persuade him to surrender, Fournier said.

A man suspected of killing a state trooper has been inside the house since Wednesday.

Sealy Jr. fled the scene and barricaded himself inside a nearby home in the Brick Mill Farm Development in Middletown, according to a Delaware State Police press release. Police say that's when Sealy fired at Ballard with a handgun he had in his waistband. He was shot by law enforcement and died at the scene. He also wouldn't say whether Ballard might have been targeted, either individually or as a police officer. When Ballard walked to the passenger side of the auto, he asked Sealy to step out of the vehicle, and a struggle ensued.

"This is a sad day for our state and for the Delaware State Police family", McQueen said, with Gov. John Carney at his side.
