Matt Carpenter belted a grand slam in the 11th inning to give the St. Louis Cardinals an 8-4 win over Toronto, Thursday afternoon.

NATIONALS 16, ROCKIES 5: Bryce Harper hit a three-run homer as part of an 11-run seventh inning and Trea Turner enjoyed another big game in Denver as Washington rolled to a win.

Matt Andriese (1-1) allowed four runs, three earned, and struck out four through seven innings. I feel good every time I go out there.

Toronto called on left-hander J.P. Howell to face the lefty-hitting Carpenter.

Unfortunately for the Cardinals, they were without Matt Carpenter on Tuesday while he served a one-game suspension.

INDIANS 4, ASTROS 3: Francisco Lindor hit a long two-run homer in the seventh to lift host Cleveland over Houston. It was the catcher's fourth RBI of the season and his first to come via something other than a solo home run. Then it seemed like it would be a quick and painless blowout by the Blue Jays.

Tampa Bay's Blake Snell allowed two runs and six hits in five innings - he has failed to pitch into the sixth inning in four consecutive starts.

The Blue Jays just can't seem to put everything together in the same game lately, and that theme continued on Friday night, despite another strong performance from Marcus Stroman.

The time off in between games didn't slow the Cardinals as they used a hot finish and fast start to sweep the Blue Jays in their double header on Thursday with 8-4 and 6-4 victories.

Kenley Jansen (1-0) got the win, striking out the side in the ninth inning, as the Dodgers managed a split of the four-game series.

"We think good things are on their way, we really do".

"Today was a big day", said Cardinals pitcher Adam Wainwright (2-3), who earned the win in the nightcap.

Moreover, the Cardinals' major-league roster and management is sending an embarrassing message to the players in the farm system because it doesn't appear that defense is important to them. Saltalamacchia hit.040/.077/.040 during his Blue Jays tenure, striking out an astounding 61.5 percent of the time. I don't know what that means.

"We're counting on him and he's off to a good start", manager John Gibbons said. Osuna, the closer, already has three blown saves this year, but he pitched a clean ninth inning on Saturday to pick up his second save of the season.

Diamondbacks 6, Padres 2: Taijuan Walker matched a career high with 11 strikeouts in eight effective innings, Chris Owings hit a pair of solo homers and Arizona beat San Diego.

"Joe Biagini coming in first and second, no outs, getting us out of that and pitching another inning And Osuna locking it down, that's big for Osuna", Gibbons said.

Ryan Goins added to Toronto's lead with a two-out, two-run single in the sixth.

Sucre's RBI-single scored Beckham to tie the game in the second.

Then, when the inning looked like it might be over, left fielder Randal Grichuk legged out an infield single and first baseman Matt Adams drove him in from first with a double to the left field corner.

In just 26 trips to the plate, Saltamacchia showed the Blue Jays all that he might not be able to provide an offensive boost after all, leading the team to designate the 31-year-old for assignment.

Stroman struck out 10 batters and allowed two runs through 7 1/3 in the no-decision.

Maile was in the starting lineup for Toronto's game against the Rays Friday night.
