Johnson struggles in wind at Wells Fargo

CHIP SHOTS: Dustin Johnson, the top-ranked player in the world, is 2 over through 13 holes in Round 2, and is now T-46 at even par.

When it got underway, players encountered challenging winds, in which Power posted a one-under par 71 and Hurley carded a three-under 69 for a five-under par total of 139.

Molinari, who dropped a shot on his closing hole by missing a 5-foot putt, was at 6-under 138.

It left dozens of players unable to finish their second round, with play due to start early on Saturday.

After starting two-over for 13 holes Friday, the reigning US Open champion sank a 24-foot birdie putt at the par-3 15th but followed with bogeys at 16 and 17 before closing his Saturday morning effort with a par, still among 79 to make the cut.

Yet after restarting on five under - tied for top spot with Seamus Power, Billy Hurley III and John Peterson - Molinari improved his score by one to secure a slender advantage ahead of round three.

"I think, to be honest, this is a great week for rookies because it's a course nobody's seen before", said Ireland's Power.

On a sunny day with a steady wind hovering around 15 miles per hour, Lehman hit 12 of 14 fairways on the 7,002-yard layout and reached 14 greens in regulation.

Holmes birdied his last three holes for a 67.

Phil Mickelson made double bogey on his last hole for a 72 and was at 143.

Johnson started well enough to act as though nothing has happened since he last played March 26 at the Dell Technologies Match Play, his third straight victory, which strengthened his hold at No. 1 in the world.

Johnson, the world's No. 1 player, opened with a 70 in his first competition in six weeks. Instead of making up ground, he made the cut with no shots to spare. Rahm began his round on the par-3 10th with a shot that came up some 20 yards short of the pin. "I maybe played a little more conservatively". "I just need to get some more rounds in, get some more reps, but I feel like the golf swing's in good shape".
