Gaviria secures third Giro stage win, Dumoulin retains pink jersey

Gaviria, who hadn't won a Grand Tour stage until this year, once again edged out Italy's Jakub Mareczko at the end of the 229-kilometer (142-mile) route from Forli to Reggio Emilia.

Fraile (Dimension Data) beat former world champion Rui Costa (UAE Team Emirates) at the end of a long breakaway.

The top of the general classification was unchanged, with Tom Dumoulin (Sunweb) in the pink jersey.

Overall, Dumoulin now leads previous leader Nairo Quintana by 2:23 after the Colombian lost a massive 2:53.

The stage was the longest of the entire Giro, spanning 229km between Forlì and Reggio Emilia, and the with a largely flat profile dominating the second half of the race, it had always been billed as one for the sprinters.

Four plucky riders jumped the field from the gun. "Vincenzo Nibali (Italy / Bahrain) +2:47" 6.

The gap subsequently dropped and never moved back above two minutes as the inevitable played out, gradually, over a seemingly interminable afternoon in which frequent roundabouts provided perhaps the only moments of interest. And Bennett certainly had power in numbers entering the home straight as four Bora riders did their bit in support of the Irishman.

Gaviria went early after a lead out from Max Richeze, and neither Marecko, Bennett - or anyone else - could come around him.

But Gaviria never gave up - powering back into contention, swerving around the melee as Ewan and Richeze clashed shoulders and nearly hit the deck, and then rounding Bennett to complete a startling turn-around.

The race against the clock also saw Dumoulin prove his credentials for overall victory in Milan on May 28. "For most of the day it was side wind".

Wednesday's stage is a medium mountain stage over 161 km between Florence to Bagno di Romagna, and that is followed by two "sprint" stages where the overall contenders will largely be looking to stay out of trouble.

"I tried to give it everything today".

"I was hoping he'd have enough time to come across, he did and his work at the end was phenomenal".
