Amazon offers free shipping on purchases of $25

Follow me on Facebook for more news on how the shipping wars affect your wallet! The service is similar to Amazon Pantry, and offers next-day delivery of household essentials (like laundry detergent and paper towels) for a flat-fee. "The fact that Amazon didn't outright match Wal-mart's free shipping timeline shows their continued commitment to the recurring revenue Prime model".

Wal-Mart started its own membership program called ShippingPass last year, which offered free two-day shipping for $49 a year.

Amazon may be protecting its own margin somewhat by offering "free shipping" to non-Prime shoppers who meet the order threshold, and reserving faster two-day shipping for Prime orders. "At this day and age, two-day shipping is table stakes, so we don't think we should charge membership for it", he said then. These items get delivered in three to five days.

But after Walmart's rollout of free shipping on orders under $35, Amazon in February dropped its requirements down to $35, as well.

Another program introduced by Walmart gives customers a discount when they ship an item directly to a store instead of their home or workplace.

Will this work for Target? Previously, non-Prime members would only qualify for free shipping if they placed an order valued at $35 or more.

The company did not officially announce the decrease, but its website now says that online orders of at least $25 are eligible for free 5-8 days shipping on eligible items.

The retailer has seen choppy sales over the past year, most recently turning in a disappointing holiday quarter. These appear to be selected by Wal-Mart management based on some formula not available to customers.
