Umpire taken by stretcher from Orioles-Blue Jays game

Zach Britton and the Baltimore Orioles made it a total loss for the Toronto Blue Jays.

If the Blue Jays are out of the playoff picture by July, should they seek a full-on rebuild or continue the retooling process in hopes of competing again in 2018?

"The one thing that's encouraging about tonight is we got some hits", said Blue Jays manager John Gibbons.

The game was delayed for about 10 minutes. Miley said. "I just spent some time slowing down a little bit throughout the week, slowing my delivery down and was able to command the fastball a little bit better, had the breaking ball a little bit tonight, was able to throw the back-door slider and then bury it when I needed to".

Joe Biagini worked a scoreless eighth before the Orioles scratched out a run off Osuna in the ninth.

Donaldson is batting.310 with two home runs and four RBIs this season.

Scott suffered a concussion a year ago, when he was hit in the face mask on a foul tip during a Dodgers-Diamondbacks game.

Umpire leaves game after being struck in mask • Home plate umpire Dale Scott left the field on a spinal board in the eighth inning of Friday night's game between the Baltimore Orioles and host Toronto Blue Jays after being hit in the face mask by a foul tip from Baltimore slugger Mark Trumbo.

Muscling their way back to respectability before the view to the top of the AL East gets hopelessly distant was never going to be easy nor an overnight assignment for the Blue Jays.

Justin Smoak drove in Morales with a single and Darwin Barney - filling in for injured third baseman Josh Donaldson - brought home Tulowitzki with a grounder booted by third baseman Manny Machado.

Both teams threatened in the first inning but couldn't push a run across. Baltimore RHP Alec Asher (season debut) will start Saturday against Toronto RHP Marco Estrada (0-1, 5.73 ERA).

More good news? For the first time on this stand, at any stage of any game, the home team held a lead. But the Orioles perhaps pushed their luck a little too far, as Asher hit Bautista leading off the 7th, advancing to second when Tulo poked a ball through the middle with one out.

Kendrys Morales singled and went to third on a double by Troy Tulowitzki.

Orioles: RHP Chris Tillman (shoulder) felt good after a bullpen session in Florida and will make a 45-pitch rehab start at Double-A Bowie on Monday.

A scary scene ensued as Scott was rushed off to the hospital strapped to a cart.

Davis tacked on a run in the sixth inning with a solo shot to deep centre field.

Blue Jays: INF/OF Chris Coghlan was selected from Buffalo to replace Donaldson.

The Blue Jays have started off their season with an abysmal 1-8 record and they already sit 5.5 games back of the division leader, the Baltimore Orioles.
