Samajwadi Party vows to back Adityanath's government for welfare of Uttar Pradesh

In doing so, he honoured a promise made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his campaign for the UP elections.

The BJP had in its poll manifesto or Lok Kalyan Sankalp Patra for Uttar Pradesh promised to write off loans taken by small and marginal farmers.

He said that 79.45 per cent of farmers in Uttar Pradesh were marginal while 13.01 per cent farmers were small and they had great hopes of getting relief from the new BJP government. "The Government has made a decision to waive all the outstanding crop loans due to small and marginal farmers as on March 31, 2017 taken till March 31, 2016 up to a maximum limit of Rs 1 lakh per farmer", Government spokesman and Health Minister Sidharthnath Singh said while briefing reporters after cabinet meeting.

The Uttar Pradesh government on Tuesday waived off Rs. 30, 729 crores worth of loans of small and marginal farmers of the state. In order to bring them back into the mainstream, their outstanding dues of Rs 5,630 crore have also been written off.

The state government said it also planned to set up 5,000 centres to buy wheat directly from farmers.

Srikant Sharma, the power minister who jointly addressed the news conference with Singh, said the cabinet had also chose to continue with the anti-Romeo squad.

While congratulating Adityanath for taking the decision in his very first cabinet meeting, Thackeray also took an indirect swipe at the BJP.

At the meeting, it was also decided that the anti-Romeo squads that have been deployed in the state to ensure security of women did not misuse their power by harassing people. "We are working to evolve the best possible solution", the minister had told PTI last week.

The Uttar Pradesh government could hold its next cabinet meeting outside state capital Lucknow, a practice that could continue.

In all, the loan waiver amount cleared by the state cabinet is to the tune of Rs 36,359 crore, he said. BJP had promised in its Sankalp Patra released during assembly polls for waving off farmers agro loans. That includes 700,000 farmers whose loans were already listed as non-performing by their banks. The UP government will procure all the wheat produced in the state it has been decided and ministers will monitor the process.
