Rubio targeted by Russian trolls, hackers

Rubio made a statement on Thursday, during a Senate Intelligence Committee hearing on Russian election interference.

Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) told the Senate Intelligence Committee on March 30, that former members of his presidential campaign faced unsuccessful hacking attempts at least twice in the past year.

"We are in a whole new realm around cyber that provides opportunity for huge, huge threats to our basic democracy", Mr Warner said.

Trump has dismissed suggestions of links with Moscow as Democratic sour grapes about his surprise November defeat of the party's candidate, Hillary Clinton.

Both senators agreed Russian interference in foreign elections continues unabated.

"I can assure you, they didn't do it because it was in the vested interest of the American people".

In Moscow, Russian President Vladimir Putin again denied that Russia tried to influence the election, but in doing so he made reference to the wrong USA president in answering a question at an Arctic forum.

Trump has branded the Russian Federation story "fake news" and has said Democrats are trying to undermine the legitimacy of his victory in the November 8 election.

While the House Intelligence Committee is embroiled in controversy, the Senate Intelligence Committee's chairman, Sen.

Embarrassing "stolen information" was released through websites such as Wikileaks, Mr Warner said, at "seemingly choreographed times that would cause maximum damage to one candidate" - Mrs Clinton.

Speaking at a press conference, Senator Mark Warner, the leading Democrat on the committee, said there had been reports of "internet trolls" working in key swing states such as Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania to influence the election through "fake news".

Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., raised concerns that the committee's investigation is not focused enough on following the money, which includes looking at the president's finances and that of his business partners. On Wednesday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov reiterated Moscow's assertion that United States claims Russia interfered in the election are completely unfounded.

Flynn was sacked from his job as President Donald Trump's first national security adviser after it was disclosed that he misled the vice president about a conversation he had with the Russian ambassador to the US during the transition.

"Former members of my presidential campaign team, who had access to the internal information of my presidential campaign, were targeted by IP addresses within unknown locations inside Russia", Rubio said.

Rubio's office said they would have no comment beyond the senator's remarks. An IP address located in Russia also does not necessarily mean that his former campaign aides were targeted by the Russian government.

Last week, Mr Nunes went straight to the White House after hearing allegations about surveillance of Mr Trump's team, rather than sharing them with Democrat colleagues on the panel.

This comes as the Chairman of the House Intelligence Committee faces calls to recuse himself because of his ties to the Trump Administration.
