Kolkata: Hotel fire leaves 2 dead, 31 evacuated safely

At least two persons were charred to death and several others were injured when major fire broke out at the high-end Golden Park Hotel near Ho Chi Minh Sarani in southern Kolkata early today. Officials of the Disaster Management Group and police officers also reached the spot.

Besides, ladders and sky lift were also used to bring the inmates out of the hotel, he said adding, the fire was brought under control after almost three hours. "The fire fighting equipment at the hotel also did not work properly during the emergency", he added. Two other guests of the hotel are being treated at a private hospital and three others including the security guard of the hotel were discharged from SSKM Hospital after treatment.

According to reports, the managing director of Golden Parkk Hotel, B.S. Gujral, and senior manager of the hotel, Gautam Majumder, were detained in the afternoon and after a marathon interrogation at Shakespeare Sarani Police Station, they were arrested in the evening.

Police said that the fire broke out at around 3 am. The glass encasing and central air conditioning made things worse for the hotel, like it did for the hospital.

"The entire hotel was covered by smoke".

Forensic department personnel went to the hospital in the afternoon and collected samples.
