Dairy farmers worry about trade to Mexico

New York's senators are pushing to change a Canadian trade policy they say is hurting dairy farmers.

Dairy farmers in the US complain it's a new tariff that closes the Canadian market to them.

Schumer was in Watertown Friday and had this to say and commented on the problem.

Far from the U.S. "Canadian dairy pricing policies are upending long-standing trade relationships with American dairy companies and have resulted in the sudden loss of major contracts for companies in both of our states", the three wrote in a letter to U.S. Trade Representative Stephen Vaughn, Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross and Acting Secretary of Agriculture Michael Young.

Regulations imposed by the Canadian government hurt dairy producers in NY and Wisconsin, the governors of both states said Tuesday. The Ottawa-based Dairy Farmers of Canada, which represents 12,000 farms, is confident the Canadian government will "defend and protect" its dairy industry and the economy, a spokeswoman said by phone.

"I am asking, please, that dairy processors think through how they can handle this extra milk in the short-term in order to sustain the long-term success of Wisconsin's dairy industry", said Brancel. It is frequently criticized by other dairy-producing countries. He suggested it has stalled his attempt to renegotiate NAFTA. Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross has blamed the Senate for delaying the confirmation of Trump's US trade representative.

"The whole thing is ridiculous".

Trump said his order would minimize exemptions that allow foreign companies to bid on projects in the US, something Canada now enjoys under NAFTA.

"Unfortunately, it appears that while US processors were making multi-million dollar investments to meet the growing cross-border market for ultra-filtered milk, the Canadian dairy industry and government were plotting a trade war against our nation's dairy farmers", Cuomo and Walker wrote.

"We're going to make some very big changes", he said.
