Special Task Force to curb drug menace in Punjab: Amarinder Singh

"Rahul has agreed to attend the swearing-in", AICC general secretary in-charge for Punjab, Asha Kumari, told HT.

Captain Singh said that the date for oath ceremony has been fixed on March 16.

The low-key swearing-in opted for by Amarinder, who comes from the royal family of Patiala, is in sharp contrast to the crores of rupees spent by his predecessor Parkash Singh Badal for his own swearing-in gala public events in 2007 and 2012.

The biggest drain on the coffers of the new state government will be funds required to waive off the farmer loans, which was a key poll promise of the Congress.

She later informed the MLAs that Rahul had proposed the name of Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee president Captain Amarinder as the new CLP leader.

Congress ended the SAD-BJP combine's ten-year regime by registering a thumping win by bagging 77 seats, one short of a two-third majority.

Since the Congress has won across the three regions of Malwa, Majha and Doaba and all the three major communities of Jat Sikhs, Hindus and Dalits, the challenge for the party and Amarinder would be to strike a balance between the three regions and communities.

To a question on the UP poll results, Capt. Singh revealed that he had spoken to Priyanka Gandhi on Saturday night, and they had discussed that the Congress had a chance of a comeback in the politically crucial state, just as it had come back in Punjab this time.

Amarinder also lashed out at the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) for refusing to accept its defeat gracefully. The PPCC president said he would be meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi soon to discuss various development projects for the state.

He added that Sutlej Yamuna Link Canal (SYL) will not be constructed at any cost.

"Instead of acknowledging that his party failed to connect with the voters of Punjab, (Delhi Chief Minister) Arvind Kejriwal is making allegations about (tampering of) Electronic Voting Machines".

"A road-map has been prepared to end the source of drugs", he said.
