South Sudan plane crashes in Wau, passengers survive

"That made the plane not to see the runway", Achieng said. "I saw it until the very last moment before the fire engulfed the aircraft".

Witnesses have said that smoke was seen coming from the back of the plane before it crashed and bursted into flames, reported Express, citing a local journalist Deng Dimo.

Images from the scene show the smoking charred wreckage of the plane fuselage and the intact tail. "Visibility was not good up to now and (the plane) was landing from the east to west then it just crashes (off) the runway".

"It is miraculous completely", Ateny Wek Ateny, the South Sudanese presidential spokesperson.

Wau Airport is a civilian worldwide hub located in the third-largest city in South Sudan, Wau, the capital of the northwestern region known as Bahr el Ghazal. "There was no single death".

Local radio reports said at least nine people had been pulled out alive from the wreckage.

According to a report in the Independent, a South Sudanese newspaper carried photos showing the burnt-out ruins of the plane.

More than 12 million people live in South Sudan.
