Penelope Cruz to Star in 'Versace: American Crime Story'

Cruz has been tapped to play Donatella Versace, sister of murdered fashion designed Gianni Versace, in the third season of the series, which has appropriately been titled Versace: American Crime Story. Production for the third, "Versace", is slated to begin next month with an expected air date in 2018. The true-crime book was writtenby Vanity Fair's Maureen Orth, who was already covering other crimes Cunanan was suspected of committing before he killed Versace; Cunanan is believed to have murdered at least five people.

Ryan Murphy, Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson are set to serve as executive producers on Versace: American Crime Story which is being produced by Fox 21 Television Studios and FX Productions.

Previously, it had been rumored that singer Lady Gaga - who appeared in Murphy's "American Horror Story" - would be playing Donatella in the series. Its premiere will follow the second season of the show, which will focus on the devastation and aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans in 2005 with Annette Bening set to play Kathleen Blanco, the former Governor of Louisiana. Her credits include "Volver", "Broken Embraces", "Nine", "To Rome With Love", "The Counselor" and "Vicky Cristina Barcelona", for which she won the supporting actress Oscar.

The first series, The People V OJ Simpson, aired past year and picked up accolades at the Golden Globes and the Emmys. (Showrunner Murphy shot down those reports in January).

"So I just don't think with her schedule, I knew that it would never have worked".

The limited series show, created by Ryan Murphy, centers each season around a famous true crime - the first season was the award-winning "The People v. O. J. Simpson"; the second season, now in development, focuses on the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
